WWII veteran Bob Masonheimer smiles next to his flaming birthday cake at Liberty Heights Retirement Community in celebration of his 100th birthday in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Masonheimer was a WWII bomber pilot stationed in Japan and had a marriage with his life's love, Maxine, for 73 years. His personal belief was to keep his emotions under control, even in the most perilous situations. His friends, like fellow veteran Ernie Gudridge, marveled at his fearlessness. “Such control,” Gudridge, 97, said. “Such courage. He used his talents to the utmost, and I swear he would get everybody on that crew to be better than they thought they could be.”
